Nightmare for Animals — A Tragedy at Lahore’s Pet and Bird Market

At approximately 4:00 a.m., a deeply distressing incident unfolded in Lahore when the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) carried out a demolition operation at the city’s pet and bird market. The site — once home to hundreds of animals including birds, cats, rabbits, and puppies — was reduced to rubble within hours.

According to several shopkeepers and witnesses, no adequate time was given to evacuate the animals. Despite repeated pleas, the operation continued unabated, resulting in the loss and suffering of countless helpless creatures.

Representatives of the market have stated that LDA officials had previously assured them of a two-day grace period to remove their animals and belongings after a meeting held at the DC Office. However, the demolition reportedly commenced in the early hours of the morning — contrary to those assurances and without meaningful notice.

The police were reportedly informed only moments before the operation, their role limited to maintaining law and order rather than ensuring the humane handling or safety of the animals. This sequence of events reflects a serious lapse in planning, communication, and compassion.

The aftermath at the site is heartbreaking — cages lie broken, and debris still conceals what remains of the market’s once-vibrant life. Witnesses describe the experience as a nightmare that words cannot adequately convey.

This incident raises urgent and important questions:

  • Were standard operating procedures for humane and safe evacuation of animals followed?
  • Why was the demolition carried out without prior notice or coordination with relevant departments, including animal welfare authorities?
  • What legal and administrative accountability will follow for this tragic episode?

We urge the Punjab Government and relevant authorities to conduct an impartial inquiry into this operation and to formulate clear protocols for handling animals in any future demolitions or evictions.

This tragedy serves as a grim reminder that urban development must never come at the cost of compassion. The voiceless cannot speak for themselves — it is our collective moral and civic duty to ensure they are protected.
